Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under general supervision, operates computed tomography (CT) equipment to obtain routine images of designated body areas according to physician orders and established CT protocols.
  • Demonstrates clinical competency in CT across all locations and patient populations. Selects appropriate technical factors based on individual patient needs and demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care. Applies Image Wisely® and Image Gently® principles to support radiation dose reduction. Performs IV access and administers contrast according to facility policy. Supports invasive procedures performed under CT guidance.
  • Participates in departmental and organizational performance improvement initiatives and efforts to enhance workflows, patient experience, quality, and safety, improving both patient care and operational efficiency. Actively participates in student and employee training and educational activities.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and prepared work environment, including cleaning and preparing patient rooms. Maintains supplies and inventory within the department. Prepares contrast administration and invasive procedure areas using aseptic technique and sterile processes in accordance with established protocols.
  • Transports patients to the CT scanner and prepares the examination room. Verifies physician orders, patient preparation, and the reason for the exam to ensure appropriate scanning protocols are followed. Communicates effectively with patients, obtains patient histories, answers questions, and explains procedures to promote patient understanding and comfort. Processes completed examinations for interpretation.
  • Ensures the proper operation and maintenance of CT equipment by performing quality control procedures and promptly reporting equipment or environmental issues.
  • Provides patient education and support, including preparing patients for procedures and addressing their physical and psychological needs. Escalates concerns through appropriate channels when necessary.
  • Prioritizes patient flow and coordinates care through consistent communication with patients, care team members, and families. Documents patient care activities in electronic health record systems and ensures final images are distributed to the PACS system in a timely manner for interpretation.
  • Consistently acts and communicates professionally, embodying the organization's SPIRIT values and fostering a respectful and supportive environment for patients, families, and colleagues. Adheres to the ARRT Standards of Ethics.
  • Applies knowledge of CT principles and practices, including anatomy and physiology, radiation safety, imaging physics, patient positioning, and patient care. Adheres to Joint Commission, state, federal, organizational, and departmental regulatory and compliance standards.

 

Qualifications

Education

  • Associate's degree required; or
  • Certificate in Radiologic Technology from a program accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE), the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), or the Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) required.

 

Experience

  • Prior work experience is not required.
  • Successful completion of a CT certificate or cross-training program preferred.

 

Licenses and Certifications

  • Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiography [R] required upon hire.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS/CPR) certification required within 90 days of hire.
  • Licensed Radiographer in the State of Maryland and/or Virginia (location dependent) required upon hire.
This position has a hiring range of : USD $35.68 - USD $64.71 /Hr.
