Job Summary and Qualifications

Pulmonary Function Technologists (PFTs) are specialized healthcare professionals who perform and interpret tests to assess lung function, supporting diagnosis, treatment, and management of respiratory conditions such as asthma, COPD, and pulmonary fibrosis.

 

Job Summary

Pulmonary Function Lab staff conduct a range of diagnostic tests to measure lung capacity, volume, flow rates, and gas exchange. They operate advanced respiratory equipment, ensure patient safety, and collaborate with physicians to develop treatment plans. They must also assist with bedside tracheostomies, bronchoscopies, to include EBUS, laser, and specialized Robotic Monarchs. The role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively with patients and healthcare teams. 

 

Key Responsibilities

· Test Administration: Perform pulmonary function tests such as spirometry, diffusion capacity, lung volumes (plethysmography), maximal pressures, and airway resistance.

· Equipment Operation & Maintenance: Calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot respiratory devices including volume/flow measurement systems, gas analyzers, and bronchoscopes.

· Patient Care: Ensure patient comfort and safety during testing for both the adult and pediatric population; provide respiratory health education.

· Data Analysis & Reporting: Interpret test results, document findings accurately in electronic or paper records, and report abnormal results to physicians.

· Collaboration: Work with healthcare providers, residents, nurses and students; support care coordination and interdisciplinary team efforts.

· Quality Assurance: Participate in quality control, improvement activities, and adherence to regulatory standards.

 

Qualifications & Skills

· Education: Requires an associate or bachelor’s degree in respiratory therapy, respiratory care. RRT (Registered Respiratory Therapist) certification required.

· Certification: CPFT or RPFT preferred in addition to RRT.

· Technical Skills: Proficiency in operating and maintaining pulmonary function equipment; understanding of respiratory physiology and pathology. Bronchoscopy expert preferred.

· Soft Skills: Strong communication, patient education abilities, attention to detail, and teamwork.

· Regulatory Compliance: Knowledge of documentation standards and patient safety protocols.

 

Work Environment

Pulmonary Function Lab staff work in clinical or research settings, often in hospitals, clinics, or academic institutions. The role involves direct patient interaction, technical precision, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
