Job Summary and Qualifications

Serves as a clinical expert for lactation and breastfeeding. The Lactation Consultant provides in -depth, individual assistance for mothers and families experiencing special or complex circumstances associated with lactation and breastfeeding. The Lactation Consultant encourages the support of breastfeeding in the medical setting through patient consultation, staff education and implementation of optimal breastfeeding policies and procedures.

  • Provides clinical expertise and care related to lactation, which includes use of the nursing process with mothers and infants that may be high or low risk, inpatient, outpatient or telephone consultations. 
  • Provides supporting documentation. 
  • Provides formal and informal teaching to parents and hospital staff. 
  • Education provided in settings outside the medical center shall be in accordance with medical center policy. 
  • Participates in improving care and practice to create a relationship focused patient care environment, which meets customer needs and includes delegation of activities related to lactation consistent with the position descriptions for patient care personnel, medical center policies, legal and regulatory requirements. 
  • Identifies opportunities for performance improvement. 
  • Enhance professional self-development and accept accountability for professional practice based on research, customer feedback and peer review. 
  • Coordinates and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to promote and provide consistency of care delivery, maintains effective channels of communication within the department and across the medical center to promote relations and interactions. 
  • All other duties as assigned.

What qualifications you will need:
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
  • (IBCLC) International Board Certified Lactation Consultant must be obtained within 2 years of employment start date(RN) Registered Nurse
  • Registered Nurse Diploma 
  • No Travel Required 
  • No experience Required Years of Experience
