Unit Details: The home unit at St. John’s Regional is 2 North Telemetry. The unit serves a very sick, high-acuity patient population, including pneumonia, end-stage renal disease, post-cath-lab patients, respiratory distress, CHF, and COPD. Philips telemetry monitors and monitor techs are used on each unit. Common non-titrating drips include amiodarone, Cardizem, and heparin. At St. John’s Regional, there are no ventilated patients, but patients may require BiPAP or CPAP. At St. John’s Pleasant Valley, the ACU combines Telemetry and Med-Surg; common patient populations include post-surgical, orthopedic, and cardiac patients. The Med-Surg nurse-to-patient ratio at St. John’s Pleasant Valley is 1:5. Travelers will not work the DOU. A hospitalist or intensivist is in house; after hours, a hospitalist shared between St. John’s Regional and St. John’s Pleasant Valley is on call. Respiratory therapy and pharmacy are available 24/7, and there is no IV team.
