Unit Details: Patient population includes telemetry, post-catheterization, medical/surgical patients requiring telemetry monitoring, and patients with respiratory difficulty. Daily discharges and admissions vary from 1-2 to 10. Ten rooms have hardwired monitors; the remaining rooms are portable telemetry-monitor capable. Monitor techs are located on the sixth floor, monitor throughout the hospital, and notify assigned nurses of issues they identify. Nurses are expected to be comfortable with basic dysrhythmia and verify telemetry strip interpretation. Nurses reconstitute antibiotics, and telemetry patients may receive titrating heparin. Nebulizers and breathing treatments are within nursing scope. The unit has no ventilators and uses nearly all other oxygen-delivery methods. Nurses place IVs and draw labs from central lines only when ordered; there are no other IV requirements. Blood sugar testing uses an AccuChek glucometer, and barcode scanning uses a staff badge and patient armband. The unit uses Omnicell for medication access. Travelers may be asked to precept or take charge based on unit needs; this is discussed first, and their comfort level is respected.

Every other holiday is required: Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s. Self-scheduling is available for travelers. Additional shifts may be picked up on a shift the traveler does not normally work, but travelers will not be required to work a different shift. No call.
