Unit Details: Patient populations include post-cath-lab, post-vascular-procedure, day 2 CABG, general telemetry, postsurgical neuro, post-craniotomy, spine, and CVA patients post-TPA. Medical-Surgical units are approximately 80% surgical and 20% oncology, including orthopedic, urological, abdominal, Whipple, and women’s surgeries; obstetrics and gynecology cases are not included. The units handle approximately 8-10 elective knee and hip cases per week. Patients are age 15 and older; no pediatrics. Cardiac drips on the Tele units include amiodarone, Cardene, nitroglycerin, heparin, and dobutamine; these are titrated down only. Medical-Surgical units also use amiodarone and Cardizem, titrated down only. Centralized telemetry is used on the Tele units. Medical-Surgical units use GE monitors with a central monitoring station technician to read them. Tele and Neuro units do not use ventilators, and the Neuro unit does not use ICP monitoring. Med-Surg units use Spectralink phones with the call light attached. Ratios are 1:3-4 on Tele B3A and Tele Neuro and 1:4 on Medical-Surgical C5 and B2C.
Shift & Scheduling: The schedule includes 4 weekend shifts per schedule (Saturday/Sunday). Tele B3A and Tele Neuro require every other weekend. Floating Requirements: The clinician is first to float. Floating is required among Telemetry and Med-Surg units and may include ICU, Cardiac Tele, all Tele units, and holding areas in the Cath Lab, ER, observation floor, or a hallway, depending on skill level. The observation floor is staffed first, followed by the other units. Tele B3A floats to similar or lower-acuity units. Medical-Surgical C5 floats to MedSurg Tele B2C and B2D, and B2C floats to MedSurg Tele C5 and B2D. Floating may occur between Chandler and Mercy Gilbert campuses. Campus and unit assignments are provided 1.5 hours before shift start. Floating between different units during a shift may occur. Floating to another campus during a single shift is rare but possible. The distance between the two campuses is 9 miles and takes 15 minutes in traffic via interstate.
